Interpreter Training Technology

(Jefferson Davis Campus)

The primary focus of this curriculum is to teach students how to interpret spoken English into American Sign Language and to translate American Sign Language into spoken English.  In addition, training will be given in transliteration and oral interpretation. Other course topics will include communication skills, psychology of deafness, linguistics, deaf culture, and educational interpreting. Students will also have the opportunity to participate in a practicum program at local technical facilities, in local educational settings, and other area settings.

This program leads to an Associate of Applied Science Degree and is preparatory for employment upon graduation from MGCCC. Where a transfer to 4-year college or university is desired, a conference should be scheduled with a MGCCC advisor.

All students completing a career or technical program must complete either the MS-CPAS (Mississippi Career Planning and Assessment System) or an MGCCC Board- approved Technical Skills Attainment assessment where applicable. Students should see an advisor for further details.
