Phlebotomy

NON-CREDIT PROGRAM

This non-credit healthcare program prepares applicants to sit for certification through the American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP) Board of Registry.  Upon successful completion of the program and the exam, the graduate is eligible for employment opportunities with various healthcare agencies, i.e., hospitals, clinics, physicians’ offices, community clinics. As a phlebotomist, the individual is successfully prepared to draw blood and other speci­mens for laboratory analysis.

Course Description: This intensive 140-hour course of study is designed to prepare students for immediate employment as phlebotomists in the hospital or clinical setting. The phlebotomist’s primary function is to assist the healthcare team in the accurate, safe, and reliable collection and transportation of specimens for clinical laboratory testing. Classes meet on campus (40 hours) with variable clinical experiences at local hospitals or clinics. Students will complete a minimum of 40 hours of theory, 100 hours of clinical training and orientation in an accredited laboratory, and 100 successful unaided blood collections including venipuncture and skin punctures.

This course meets the eligibility requirements for the American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP) Board of Registry in Phlebotomy Technician (PBT-ASCP). Students that complete this course can apply for certification through the ASCP Board of Registry to become certified as a PBT-ASCP. Cost: $550 paid at any MGCCC Business Office (Testing fees for the ASCP certification are NOT included in course fee.)

Steps for admission into the program:

I.  Phlebotomy Application Process:

a)  Complete the MGCCC Registration Form for Non-Credit Healthcare Courses listing Phlebotomy as the course name and include a listed course date of interest (can be found on the MGCCC Programs of Study/Healthcare programs webpage or at any campus location).

b)  Obtain a copy of your high school or GED transcript.

Note: Students must be able to show proof of a high school diploma or GED by submitting the transcript. Exception: current High School students in the Spring Semester of the senior year may be admitted at the recommendation of the local high school that the student is on the final path to graduation and has taken background courses to prepare the student for the rigorous demands of the Phlebotomy curriculum.

c)  Upon receipt of the Non-credit registration form and high school or GED transcript, you will be notified by email to take the online ACT Career Ready 101 Practice exam. An ACT score of 18 or greater can be accepted in lieu of the ACT Career Ready 101.

Note: You will be provided with a username and password to log on to the practice test.
You must score a 3 or higher on each section (Applied Math, Locating Information and Reading for Information) to be eligible to take the live CRC exam.

d) After scoring at least a 3 on each section, email or fax a copy of the results from the online Career Readiness Certification (CRC) Practice Exam to the Continuing Education Coordinator.

e)  The Continuing Education Coordinator will review your documents and contact you via email with information on completing the proctored CRC exam (you must provide a valid email address on the registration form).

f)  Following registration and successfully passing the proctored CRC exam with a score of 3 or higher in each section, the student will be enrolled into a phlebotomy course.

g)  Once you receive an email confirming registration with the date, time and location, you can pay the $550 course fee at any MGCCC campus business office.

Note: Students are accepted conditional until all required pre-clinical documents are received on the second day of class and approved for clinical/lab attendance.

h)  Enrollment will be based on a first come first serve condition following submission of the:

  1. Non-credit Registration form
  2. High school or GED transcript
  3. ACT score or CRC practice transcript with at least a score of 3 in each section
  4. CRC proctored score with at least a score of 3 in each section
  5. Full course payment, which is made at the MGCCC campus business office.

Note: Students are accepted conditional until all required pre-clinical documents are received on the second day of class and approved for clinical/lab attendance.

****Criminal Background CheckDUE on FIRST day of class. All students accepted into a MGCCC Phlebotomy course must obtain a criminal background check from a MGCCC Campus Police Office. The $65 criminal background check payment is not included in the Phlebotomy program cost.  The payment is made at the campus business office with the receipt presented at the Campus Police Office in order for testing to take place.

Note: Disqualifying background check results must be reviewed by the Health Sciences Administrative Team to determine the student’s continuous enrollment and final acceptance into the program.  Administrative approval will be based upon “MS Code 43-11-13” related to clinical attendance. If not approved, the student forfeits the course fee and the right to continue in the course. The Continuing Education Coordinator will review your documents and contact you via email with information on completing the proctored CRC exam.

Note: MGCCC reserves the right to substitute instructors, change class schedules, and cancel programs due to insufficient enrollment or unforeseen circumstances.
