Summer Entry -Transitional Hybrid Program

Levels 3 & 4 - LPN-to-RN Hybrid Mobility Track – Semester One (Level 3) and Semester Two (Level 4) of the Hybrid Mobility Track are offered at the Jefferson Davis Campus.
At Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College, we are proud to offer nursing program options which will allow our students to choose the nursing career path that is best suited to their current needs.
The MGCCC Nursing Division offers four nursing education options:
- Associate Degree Nursing
- Practical Nursing
- LPN to RN Mobility Track
- LPN to RN Hybrid Mobility Track
The LPN to RN Hybrid Mobility track in the Nursing Program is designed to assist qualified Licensed Practical Nurses with the transition to Registered Nurses utilizing a hybrid learning environment. LPNs accepted into the Hybrid Mobility Track are awarded fourteen (14) semester hours of credit for previous nursing education. Enrollment is limited. After successfully completing the summer transition course NUR 1116 , Hybrid Mobility Track students are allowed to by-pass the first year of the required Associate Degree Nursing courses and enter the second year nursing courses.
To graduate, Hybrid Mobility Track students must successfully complete all nine degree required academic support courses, the Transition Course( NUR 1116 ), and the second year nursing courses; credit for these courses plus the 14 credit hours for previous education equal the required seventy-two (72) semester hours to be awarded an Associate of Applied Science Degree.
The program is state accredited by the Mississippi board of Trustees of State Institutions of Higher Learning and pending continual national accreditation by the Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing, Inc. (ACEN), 3343 Peachtree Road NE, Suite 850, Atlanta, GA 30326 (404- 975-5000)
Graduates will be eligible to apply to take the National Council Licensure Examination for Registered Nurses® given by the National Council of State Boards of Nursing (NCSBN) and will earn the title Registered Nurse (RN) credentialed upon successful completion of the exam.
Program Mission, Concepts and Outcomes
The mission of Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College Nursing Program is to provide a learning environment that facilitates the development of qualified persons in the community to achieve the goal of becoming nurses who value the concepts of caring, competence and professionalism.
The Concepts & Outcomes of the LPN to RN Hybrid Mobility track Nursing program are:
- Practice nursing that is client centered, caring, culturally sensitive and based on the physiological, psychosocial and spiritual needs of clients (Client-Centered Care).
- Collaborate with members of the interdisciplinary health care team to promote continuity of client care (Interdisciplinary Collaboration).
- Use research as a basis for evidence based nursing practice and clinical judgment (Evidence-Based Practice).
- Promote quality improvement by participating in the development and implementation of organizational and care related plans for improving health care services (Quality Improvement).
- Provide a safe environment for clients, self and others. Provide a safe environment for clients, self and others (Safety).
- Integrate information technology resources into the provision of client care (Informatics).
- Provide health-related education to restore health and promote optimal wellness (Client-Education).

Admission Procedure
- Make application and be accepted to Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College. Application can be completed online.
- Submit copies of official transcripts of all schools attended to the Office of Admissions. All transcripts must be reviewed by the Office of Admission for determination of course credits. LPN coursework must be from a regionally accredited Institution.
- Meet all Academic Requirements (listed below) and complete any program pre-requisites or Entry Requirements.
- The LPN to RN Hybrid Transitional student will be required to have two (2) years of current (within the last year), documented work experience as a Licensed Practical Nurse. This requirement does not apply to the recent (preceding year) LPN graduate from Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College PN Exit Option Program.
- After successful completion of all academic and entry requirements, the student may submit a Nursing Application for Program Admission beginning April 1st of each year for summer entry students. Summer Transitional Students must be successful with a grade of “C” or better to enter the LPN-to-RN Hybrid Mobility Track (Semesters 3 and 4). The Summer Hybrid Transitional Program cannot be repeated. However, students desiring to repeat the summer semester, may be eligible to re-enter, with one additional attempt, the non-hybrid Transitional summer program. LPN to RN Hybrid Transitional Program ADMISSIONS CHECKLIST 1/2016
Application deadline for Summer Entry is May 15th. All test scores, transcripts and required documentation must be received by this date. Incomplete applications will not be considered. Late applications may be considered depending upon space availability on the first day of class.
Academic and Entry Requirements
- The LPN to RN Hybrid Transitional student will be required to have two (2) years of current (within the last year), documented work experience as a Licensed Practical Nurse (letter from Employer, W-2 Wage Form)
- Submit two letters of recommendation from persons familiar with applicant in a professional capacity. If possible, one recommendation should come from current supervisor.
- An ACT composite score of 18 and a 2.5 grade point average.
- To waive a composite ACT score of less than 18, the applicant must successfully complete 24 semester hours of degree-required courses with a GPA of 2.5 or higher. The 24 credit hours must include Anatomy and Physiology I, Anatomy & Physiology II and Microbiology with a grade of “C” or better in each. Science Courses may be repeated only once within the five year period.
- Achieve a composite score of 65 or above on the TEAS V examination - a minimum score of 60 is required in all other PN/ADN options – Only 2 TEAS attempts will be permitted annually for hybrid option students beginning 2015 (Check nursing website regarding TEAS Registration, Testing, and Remediation)
- Have a consistent and reliable computer with Internet access and required components (Sound card with speakers, printer, microphone, web-camera capable of video web conferencing, DVD/CD-ROM drive)
- Have a basic understanding of computer terminology, specifications, software and applications (Microsoft® Windows® 7 or later/Firefox/Chrome, Microsoft Office® 2010 or later, Adobe® Reader® 9.0 or later, navigating the Internet, sending and receiving emails with and without attachments, and an Antivirus application updated regularly)
- Complete the Nursing Web Application in Banner using your Single Sign-In Username & Password
- Participate in a Mandatory Pre-Nursing Webinar Session (The Webinar Date and time will be provided following official program acceptance)
- Proof of attainment of a current IV therapy Certification or successful completion of an approved IV Therapy educational program in the Expanded Role of IV Therapy for the Licensed Practical Nurse in Mississippi is strongly recommended
- Comply with Mississippi law requiring a Criminal Background History Check with Fingerprinting through the Mississippi Department of Health. All Nursing and Allied Health applicants are required to obtain a clear or acceptable Criminal Background Check from the MGCCC Campus Police at JD, JC, Perkinston or the George County Campus/Center. Selection Process
Program openings are filled based on Selective Admission; applicants are ranked based on their individual achievement test scores and prior college course work. Student ranking for entry into the LPN to RN Hybrid Mobility track is based on a point system and residency. Students are awarded points for the required ACT composite score, the G.P.A. (pre-requisite courses, plus any other degree-required nursing courses or previous nursing courses taken at MGCCC or another institution within the last five years), and the TEAS examination result. In-district applicants (Mississippi residents of Harrison, Jackson, Stone and George Counties) are admitted before out-of-district applicants (Mississippi residents of counties other than Harrison, Jackson, Stone and George). Out-of-state applicants are not admitted until all in-state applicants are admitted. Program enrollment is limited; however, enrollment is also influenced by availability of clinical rotation slots, applicant numbers, and faculty. Students who are selected are also held to the following program policies.
LPN to RN Mobility Track Program Policies
- All Nursing and Allied Health students must submit to substance testing in accordance with the Substance Testing Policy and
- Procedures for Nursing and Allied Health Programs. The Nursing and Allied Health Program’s substance testing policy can be viewed on-line at SUBSTANCE TESTING POLICY .
- A student must be deemed physically and emotionally able to meet the requirements for the LPN to RN Hybrid Mobility Track Nursing program. A physical examination, immunization records, CPR Certification and completed health form, signed by a Medical Physician, is required prior to the first meeting of the program.
- Upon admission to the LPN to RN Hybrid Mobility Track, students must maintain a 2.0 GPA on the required courses and complete each course with a C or better.
- Adherence to additional clinical affiliation requirements may be necessary depending on clinical rotation placement. (i.e. hospital orientation, HIPAA training, etc.)
