CONTINUING EDUCATION HEALTHCARE COURSE

Certified Nursing Assistant

NON-CREDIT PROGRAM

This non-credit healthcare program prepares applicants to sit for the national exam to become a Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA). Upon successful completion of the program and the exam, the graduate is eligible for employment opportunities with various healthcare agencies, i.e. nursing homes, home health providers and community clinics. As a CNA, the foundational skillsets required in more robust healthcare disciplines like nursing or medical assisting have been effectively developed.

Course Description: This Mississippi State-approved program prepares students for employment in long-term care facilities, hospitals, clinics, and home health agencies to provide basic care to patients or clients. Upon completion of the 100 hours of training, participants are eligible to take the National Nurse Aide Assessment Program (NNAAP) examination.  Cost: $595 paid at Business Office – Testing fees for the NNAAP exam are included in course fee. (The MGCCC Non-Credit Refund Policy is on the Registration form).

Steps for admission into the program are listed below:

I.  CNA Application Process:

a)  Complete the Non-Credit Registration form listing CNA as the course name and include a listed course date of interest (can be found on the MGCCC Community Education webpage or at the campus location).

b)  Obtain a copy of your high school or GED transcript

Note: Students must be able to show proof of a high school diploma or GED by submitting the transcript. Exception: current High School students in the Spring Semester of the senior year may be admitted at the recommendation of the local high school that the student is on the final path to graduation and has taken background courses to prepare the student for the rigorous demands of the CNA curriculum.

c)  Register to take the online Career Readiness Certification Practice exam by emailing or calling the Nursing Skills Lab, Simulation and Continuing Education Manager located at the campus offering the course (see online schedule for campus location).

Note: You will be provided with a username and password to log on to the practice test.
You must score a 3 or higher on each section (Applied Math, Locating Information and Reading for Information) to be eligible to take the live CRC exam.

d)  After scoring a score of 3 on each section, email or fax the Non-credit Registration form, high school or GED transcript and a copy of the results from the online Career Readiness Certification (CRC) Practice Exam to the Nursing Skills Lab, Simulation and Continuing Education Manager located at the campus offering the course (Campus, Manager’s Name, fax and email address listed below).

Note: You will be contacted via email with information on scheduling to take the live CRC at a MGCCC Assessment Center. Please include a valid email address on Non-Credit Registration form.

e)  The Nursing Skills Lab, Simulation and Continuing Education Manager will review your documents and contact you via email with information on completing the proctored CRC exam (a valid personal email address must be made available on the registration form).

f)  Following registration and successfully passing the proctored CRC exam with a score of 3 in each section, the student will be enrolled into a CNA course.  Enrollment will be based on a first come first serve condition following submission of the:

a.  Non-credit Registration form
b.  High school or GED transcript
c.  CRC practice transcript with at least a score of 3 in each section
d.  CRC proctored score with at least a score of 3 in each section
e.  Full course payment which is made at the MGCCC campus business office.

Note: Win Job Center letters are no longer offered for the CNA course.

g)  Following completion of registration and course payment, a letter of conditional acceptance will be emailed to the applicant by the Nursing Skills Lab, Simulation and Continuing Education Manager (a valid personal email address must be made available on the registration form).

Note: Students are accepted conditional until all required pre-clinical documents are received on the second day of class and approved for clinical/lab attendance.

II.  Pre-clinical Requirements

Following the conditional acceptance into the program and on the first class day, the Instructor will inform the student of the steps required to obtain the mandatory pre-clinical requirements. All pre-clinical requirements and/or purchase receipts must be provided to the Instructor by the second day of class.

The requirements are:

a)  MGCCC Student I.D. – All students accepted into a MGCCC CNA course must obtain a student I.D. from a MGCCC Campus Police Office.  The initial I.D. is free of charge, however, if it is a replacement I.D., the cost is $10 which can be paid in the business office at each location.

b)  Criminal Background Check - All students accepted into a MGCCC CNA course must obtain a criminal background check from a MGCCC Campus Police Office. The $65 criminal background check payment is not included in the CNA program cost.  The payment is made at the campus business office with the receipt presented at the Campus Police Office in order for testing to take place.  Campus Police Office contact numbers are:

Note: Disqualifying background check results must be reviewed by the Nursing and Allied Health Administrative Team to determine the student’s continuous enrollment and final acceptance into the program.  Administrative approval will be based upon “MS Code 43-11-13” related to clinical attendance. If not approved, the student forfeit’s the course fee and the right to continue in the course.

c)  PPD Tuberculin Test – All students accepted into a MGCCC CNA course must obtain the PPD (Skin) Tuberculin Test or submit a result dated within the last six months of course start.  If the test result is positive, a current chest x-ray result must be performed and results submitted for review.  The PPD test fee (approximately $20 at the local health department) is not included in the CNA program cost.

Note: Positive skin test results must be reviewed by the Nursing and Allied Health Administrative Team to determine the student’s continuous enrollment and final acceptance into the program.  Administrative approval will be based upon clinical affiliation agreements. If not approved, the student forfeits the course fee and the right to continue in the course.

d)  Hepatitis Record or Waiver Form - All students accepted into a MGCCC CNA course must submit a copy of the three (3) series hepatitis immunization record or a signed copy of a Hepatitis Waiver statement provided by the Instructor on the first day of class. The hepatitis test fee is not included in the CNA program fee.

e)  Substance Testing – All students accepted into a MGCCC CNA course must obtain a substance test from a MGCCC Medical Analysis Clinic. The $25 testing fee is not included in the CNA program cost.  The payment is made at the Medical Analysis office with the receipt presented to the CNA Instructor on the 2nd class day.  MGCCC Medical Analysis contact information is listed below:

Note: All students are required to sign a medical record release so results can be reported to the Dean of Nursing & Allied Health. Drug screen results can take as long as 24-72 hours. If the drug screen result comes back “non-negative” from the lab the MRO will contact the donor to review the findings.

f)  Lab Release of Liability Form - All students accepted into a MGCCC CNA course must sign and submit a copy of the Lab Release of Liability Form provided by the Instructor on the first day of class.

III.  Additional Requirements:

  • Uniform - white uniform or scrubs and plain white shoes. Cost is approximately $30
  • Stethoscope with bell and diaphragm – Approximately $25 at campus book store.
  • Watch with a second hand – Approximately $20 from a local dollar store.
  • Textbooks - Will be provided by Instructor
  • Supplies - students must use a CPR Mouthpiece or mouth shield for CPR (Extra shields are available for approximately $2.00 at the college bookstore; wear old clothes for CPR class)

Note: MGCCC reserves the right to substitute instructors, change class schedules, and cancel programs due to insufficient enrollment or unforeseen circumstances.
