CONTINUING EDUCATION COURSE

CPR - Basic Life Support (BLS) Instructor

NON-CREDIT TRAINING

Course Description: This course trains individuals to teach a variety of Basic Life Support classes including: Basic Life Support for Healthcare Providers & Professional Rescuers, and all AHA Heartsaver programs including: adult CPR, child CPR, infant CPR, AED use, first aid, pediatric CPR/first aid, and blood-borne pathogens. The American Heart Association’s CIC is an engaging, multi-media tool designed to provide a foundation for teaching and facilitating regardless of an instructor or instructor candidate’s area of specialization.

Requirements:

I.  All learners must have a current AHA BLS provider card prior to taking the onsite instructor training and must also have completed the online AHA Core Instructor Course (CIC).

  • The Core Instructor Course (CIC) is the first step toward becoming an AHA Instructor and must be taken by all new instructors prior to taking a discipline-specific instructor course.
    • This course can be delivered in three ways: online through the AHA Professional Education Center, via CD-ROM, or in a classroom.
    • All instructors and instructor candidates must confer with their AHA Training Center to determine which method they should use to complete the course.
  • After completing both the online CIC and the onsite BLS for Healthcare Providers training, individuals can contract with a training center to provide BLS or Heartsaver courses as a source of income.

The MGCCC Nursing Skills, Simulation and Continuing Education Manager will contact Instructors  aligned with the MGCCC AHA Training Center to check on their availability to facilitate a CPR class date which is scheduled each semester and as needed. Instructors aligned with the MGCCC AHA Training Center are considered independent contractors and at no time should they solicit MGCCC students or employees or use college property or equipment to facilitate CPR classes outside of their contracted class dates.

Steps for New Instructors Interested in Aligning with the MGCCC Training Center are listed below:

  1. A new instructor interested in aligning with the MGCCC Training Center must first fill out an Instructor Candidate Form and send it to the Training Center Coordinator. The instructor must meet the criteria for verification of instructor potential prior to being granted alignment.
  2. The instructor must produce a certificate of completion for the Instructor Essentials Course in the discipline that they want to teach (i.e. BLS, Heartsaver, ACLS, PALS, PEARS, etc.)
  3. The instructor must produce a current copy of their provider card in the discipline they wish to become an instructor. If the card is expired, they will need to take a Provider course in the discipline they wish to teach prior to being allowed into the Instructor course.
  4. The instructor must take an Instructor course offered by MGCCC or provide a copy of their current unexpired Instructor card and fill out and submit the Instructor Course Completion Notice to Primary TC Form if they chose to take an Instructor course from another Training Center.
  5. Each new instructor’s first class must be monitored by the Training Center Faculty, and an Instructor Monitor Form must be completed and submitted to the Training Center Coordinator prior to the Instructor teaching a class on their own.

Steps on Transferring an Alignment or Adding MGCCC as a Secondary Training Center for Alignment are listed below:

If transferring the alignment or adding MGCCC as a secondary training center for alignment, all instructors must possess a current BLS or Heartsaver Instructor Card and be in good standing with their current training center

  1. An instructor interested in aligning with the MGCCC Training Center must first fill out an Instructor Candidate Form and send it to the Training Center Coordinator. The instructor must meet the criteria for verification of instructor potential prior to being granted alignment. The instructor must submit a current copy of the unexpired instructor card. If expired, completion of the process for new instructors is required.
  2. After the instructor has been granted alignment, the MGCCC Training Center Coordinator will fill out the top portion of the Records Transfer Request Form and send it to the instructor seeking alignment. The instructor fills out their portion of the form and sends it to their former or concurrent training center for transfer of records to MGCCC.
  3. After receiving all instructor records from the former or concurrent training center, the MGCCC Training Center Coordinator or designee will contact the instructor regarding the completion of the transfer.

Note: MGCCC reserves the right to substitute instructors, change class schedules, and cancel programs due to insufficient enrollment or unforeseen circumstances.
